Can install Maui on NVIDA GTX 645 - fredhoud - 20th August 2016

@AJSlye, @leszek,

I installed Maui on my hp desktop with GTX 645 NVIDA GUP. When I get into my login screen the screen goes to a black screen. I had this issue with Netrunner 17 as well, and after you guys guide me to remove the NVIDA driver, it worked with the generic driver. I am able to login to safe mode, and get to a terminal. I typed  "sudo apt-get remove nvidia", but nothing happens. I also see there are several NVIDIA drivers in Synaptic manger, but nothing for 645. Is there any way to fix this?  Sad

It should be using the nouveau driver by default.
This GPU should also be supported by the Nvidia proprietary driver beginning with version 340.96.

Well, as soon as I enter my password at the login screen it goes black (black screen, and stays that way.

What about the TTY (ctrl+alt+f1)?

RE: Can install Maui on NVIDA GTX 645 - fredhoud - 20th August 2016

I get a time-out message. I tried tty1, tty2, and tty3.
It says noveau channel 3 [Xorg3373] kick timeout, and keeps repeating.

Well, that's not good. Try passing nouveau.modeset=0 from grub.

I guess I have to stick with the "rolling version" on this computer, and try to reformat after an update when it breaks! What's weird is that I just installed it on my new computer I built with NVIDIA GTX 960, and it worked just fine. I also tried and installed NVIDIA driver 340.96, but it goes totally blank, and you don't get any screen at all! My work desktop broke yesterday after an update (HP700 - NVIDA GTX 645). The screen went black after entering my password. I installed Maui with no problem on that one as well.
So I suppose there is no hope with this HP750 desktop - GTX 745?  Sad

@AJSlye,
This is really wired. I just installed KDE Neon 5.7.3 on this HP750-GTX 745 GPU, and it worked just fine! KDE Neon is also based on Ubuntu, and it loaded just like Maui, and no problem logging in! So what could it be?

Never mind, I take it back. After a system update I get the black screen again. So back to square one! I guess I just have to stick with what I have on this computer until perhaps later, newer versions would work.

This is confusing!
can you answer.....
did you a install nvidia driver?
have you removed a nvidia driver?
can you get to the desktop?
If you installed nvidia driver, did you use synaptic?
your can get nvidia-370 by adding this ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-370

This is how I installed the driver with no problems

@fredhoud
Did you install nvidia-340 or nvidia-340-uvm?
I'd recommend using the uvm driver packages if installing Nvidia.
Also why didn't try the 361 driver first, these are the latest released?

Could you please list the exact model numbers (example: HP ENVY Desktop - 750-000nd)?

Note: Nvidia-370 is a beta driver and as such not recommended.
