Viber (another case) - MurlocQ - 15th September 2016

Hi!

I've downloaded Viber using Vivaldi, and installed first with just clicking on the .deb file, and the Qapt came up offering to install it. It said it had installed it correctly, but then it didn't appear in the start menu. Then I removed it (using the terminal with apt-get --purge remove command), and installed it again using terminal (dpkg -i viber.deb) to no avail. It won't appear in the menu, and when I type viber or Viber in terminal it says that there's no such command.
Hope I won't have to reinstall Maui just to get it working as I fear it wouldn't work again...
Thanks in advance for your effort/advice!

You can check the contents of the installed viber package by executing dpkg -L viber in the terminal.
Maybe the desktop file is missing from that package or the package is broken somehow.
Anyway seeing what's installed by the viber package might be useful to find the binary to execute and run the application.

I've done what you said, but there wasn't any difference in it. So what I did was that I downloaded it again from Viber's site, but this time with Firefox, which didn't even ask do I want to overwrite the existing viber.deb. And it automatically opened the Qapt to install. I pressed 'install', and it did install.
But when I tried to start it from the terminal, didn't work as it said no such command. This time however I opened Dolphin and navigated to /opt/viber, and pressed on the file called Viber, and it suddenly appeared! Although it didn't react anything to that earlier either! I set it up, and now it's even shown in the Launcher. This is totally irrational...
Yet I have another question still connected to viber:
When viber runs it has a little icon in the panel tray, which holds also the sound, networks and so on. Now, when I press left click on the usual panel tray icons for instance: networks; it pops up. But when I press on the Viber's icon nothing happens. Only if I press right click and choose "open Viber" then it comes up. But I don't have problem with Skype, which reacts to its panel tray icon at once. Do you have any ideas why is that, or how to fix it? As it worked earlier, I mean on earlier versions of the Plasma.

Viber seems to use an old legacy icon which isn't 100% supported anymore.

Have you tried the viber wrapper indicator yet?

This should still work under 16.04..

Hi AJSlye!
Sorry for the late response, and thanks for the advice!
So I've tried viber wrapper indicator as it was written on the site, but it didn't install its dependencies.
Therefore I used sudo apt-get -f install, which solved its dependency problems, but the viber icon still acts the same way.  Confused
It seems I'll have to wait for Viber to solve that minor issue...
