Let's not hurry 5.8.1, ok? Apparently no one at KDE uses activities anymore.
Over at Neon stable the upgrade appears to have trashed any systems using anything more than the default activity.

Many thanks. I am gripped by the deep irony here. KDE's Dev's responded to my recent bug report [& maybe others too, although i couldn't see any before i created mine] that 5.8.0 damaged the Activities Manager, with a "fix" released in 5.8.1 that now entirely breaks Plasmashell itself if Users have any Activities. I suppose that's one way to not see any further A/M bugs!
This mess would appear to be our first tangible benefit to flow from Maui Dev's very recent deployment of their sandboxed repo, to safeguard we Users from incurring broken systems if any serious Plasma5 bugs escape into the wild. Thank you, Maui Devs!!!

1. Seems like this bug affects only users using NVidia Prime setting.
2. Seems like bug is now patched, anyway.

We tested that with our maui-xenial-backports-neon repo which has 5.8.1 aswell and could not 100% reproduce the issue. So the desktop still loaded though the activities were listed as inactive in the activity switcher. (Though the new activity was created using 5.8.1 and not having one on 5.8.0 and updating to 5.8.1)

It will most probably land with Plasma 5.8.2 and I advised Neon to include that patch in their packaging asap as it should fix the the issue reported here:

Oh YAY, i've solved the blank black thumbnails problem for 5.8.0 in Activities Manager.
Credit goes to Cobber in https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=136706&p=365673#p365647, from whose good detective work i had my idea. S/he discovered that the Activity Pager widget is the trigger for the problem, & removing it leads to the problem going away [after logout/in]. Even though s/he was troubleshooting 5.8.1 in KDE Neon, & i still "only" have 5.8.0 in Maui, i thought it might be worth testing. I deleted this widget, logged out/in, & TA-DA, the A/M now shows the correct thumbnails for my three Activities again, just like it used to in 5.7.5. Cool.
PS -- I'm terribly sorry for not originally mentioning that i had put that widget into my Task Bar; never in a million years would i have guessed that it could be relevant to the problem root cause. Sigh.

Hmm... I am glad that it is solved for you. But I can reproduce that issue without having that widget active or without using that at anytime. So there is a more severe problem here. Right after creation of an activity I get a black preview that does not refresh even when switching to that activity.
Though I am testing this on 5.8.1 now. So maybe an issue there with another cause.
