On two different machines I wanted to use the backport servers to update plasma from 5.10.2 to 5.12.3. in each case the download was OK. But at reboot I cant go further than the following screen.

Confirmed, do not update Maui 17.06 using xenial backport and neon backport.
The only sequence which worked was
5.10.2 to 5.11.3 to 5.12.1 then 5.12.2 and 5.12.3.

sudo apt-get install -f resolved the problem after the installation.
