Thunderbird its very old - wonder - 14th October 2016

Hi,
In the first time, congratulations for this distro, I'm new in Maui (my old distro are Mint) and I have very happy with Maui.
In the second time, sorry for my poor english Smile

Well, yesterday I was installed Maui, I need Thunderbird because I can't export/import my actual configurations/accounts/mails from Kmail to new Kmail (but this, is other question/thread Smile)
I was install Thunderbird and I view that the version its 38, is a old version of TB.
Its possible add a ppa from stable version?
I search but only view ppa's for beta and/or next versions for TB ubuntu.

Regards!

RE: Thunderbird its very old - leszek - 14th October 2016

We have a newer version here. The problem why we did not push it is that it breaks Lightning calendar extension that comes preinstalled by default.
The Plasmazilla Builds PPA provides that newer version. If you want to use it you can. However you need to remove and reinstall the lightning extensions if you need it (or don't want to be nagged with a message that it is broken everytime)
https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+archive/ubuntu/builds

We still have to take a look how to deal with this in details.

I completely agree with leszek, please don't upgrade TB until the lightning mess is not resolved, since I use it for enterprise mail, calendar and contacts and calendar is completely unusable in the newest version. I don't think you will miss anything from the new version anyway ;-)

Hi,
Thanks for your replies and help!

Yes, I try (before read your replies) to download latest version from TB website, I execute and works, but before this, I view that the Lighting crashes.
For me this extension es important, for calendar and contacts.

For this reason, I wait for resolved this issue for upgrade TB, and tomorrow, when install Maui in my tower, not upgrade TB Smile

Regards!

Yeah like I said lightning works again when removed and reinstalled. Though I am not sure about if removing the extension will remove calendars and configurations aswell.
This is something we have to test and keep you informed about if we find an easy solution.

RE: Thunderbird its very old - rocky7x - 14th October 2016

I use the M$ Exchange extension to get the calendar and GAL and I tried everything when I had it installed, there was no way, tried reinstalling, recreation of calendar, you name it.. then I downgraded and no problem since then.

RE: Thunderbird its very old - wonder - 14th October 2016

This night I go to install fresh install of Maui in my tower, I have a backup of my actual TB (version 45 of Linux Mint), and when I have install Maui and TB I made test with Lighting and posted the tests.

RE: Thunderbird its very old - wonder - 15th October 2016

Well, I finished my fresh install of Maui in my tower.
After update system, the first, I install a spanish language pack for thunderbird.
After this, I add the ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+archive/ubuntu/builds
I upgrade TB.
I open TB and yes, appears the error with Lighting.
Also, some part of TB are in english, aren't 100% spanish...its strange....
I deleted my .thundebird folder of my user folder.
I copy my old .thunderbird folder of my old installation of Linux Mint in my new installation.
I open TB and works fine, all works fine, Lighting works fine and other extensions, and now, its 100% spanish...strange...

Regards!

RE: Thunderbird its very old - kdemeoz - 15th October 2016

For several weeks / couple of months i'd been running TB 49.0 Beta, with the associated Lightning version, & it was all good. Last week it began incessantly nagging me that there was a newer version available, but this initially puzzled me coz every time i checked here https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ there was no newer version of the Beta, & i was [deliberately] in the Beta stream. Eventually i deduced that despite me being in Beta stream, it had been nagging me actually about the Release stream, & when i checked, indeed there was 45.4.0, which i duly downloaded, extracted, & moved into /usr/lib/. After starting it, Lightning was predictably disabled, but this was really no hassle as i simply installed the compatible version, & once again all is fine. Obviously i backed up my profile before doing this, but i did not need to revert to it as the process was entirely successful.

It was all pretty easy & straightforward. Whilst i'd prefer not to have to manage this myself, but rather leave it to the Repos, i wasn't willing to keep using the old 38.8 [which was why i'd jumped to the Beta, those weeks/months ago]. This is not a criticism of Maui Devs btw, as even when i was still using Mint 17.3 KDE, their Repos still only gave me 38.8.

Hi kdemeoz Wink

In my case, I download the TB of repo https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+archive/ubuntu/builds and in the first time, all works fine, inclusive Lighting, but now I view that, the extension FireTray, works well, but I have only a one issue, when minimize TB to systray, only I can restore with middle mouse button.
I think in download TB of mozilla website, descompress and move to /usb/lib/ and test.
