I tried the free software driver but it does not work, I have black screen.
I find strange that the issue appeared only after the upgrade to okular 1.0.0 in KDE apps 16.12. Could it be an issue of the poppler pdf backend?

Okulars code was changed from qt4/kde4libs based to qt5/kf5 based. That might also have something to do it. Though in general the poppler backend should be the one responsible for rendering the stuff. So indeed some kind of strange rendering issue.

A workaround working for me is to convert pdf files to ps with pdf2ps and then back to pdf with ps2pdf. The final pdf is a bit larger than the original but okular can render it correctly.

The issue is solved for me after upgrading to 17.03
