Upgrading or reinstall - dadakrpa - 14th March 2017 Hello, I have been enjoining Maui since V1 (and Netrunner before that). As I changed computers I did not upgrade to 2 but did a fresh install of 2.1 which took only few hours to get it where I wanted it to be. Only since then I have been trying to install other programs from the repro (Kipi plugins) and I lost Gwenview in the proccess without being able to get it back due to broken packages. I spend an afternoon rolling things back and getting Gwenview working again (no kipi still) Seeing the time I spend my main question is that I am feeling it maybe better and faster to reinstall. If your advice would be the same I would like to know if backing up my home directory and copying it back after reinstalling the new version would be enough. Or are there other things to consider. Thank you so much for your advice and guidance. Dada RE: Upgrading or reinstall - leszek - 14th March 2017 If the system isn't stable or indicates broken packages it is I think better to reinstall. This should work with your /home directory on a different partition or saved as backup and reusing it. Though there is no guarantee for it. As for kipi stuff. I am not sure if this is available in the new version though. (Neon does not provide it and we usually take stuff from neon when it comes to this) RE: Upgrading or reinstall - dadakrpa - 14th March 2017 Thank you for your response :-) The "no guarantee" does not give so much confidence though. Not that I am expecting any guarantees... Just wondering where you feel the risk is. Is the main doubt the plasma and program configuration files? Surely all my data would not be affected. Sorry to hear the Kipi stuff is not yet included. I always use it to easily do batch transformations on photo's. The bigger problem with reusing a /home partition is the permission stuff for Xorg. (like wrong permission for .Xauthority file and such) RE: Upgrading or reinstall - dadakrpa - 15th March 2017 (14th March 2017, 20:43)leszek Wrote:Quote: Is the main doubt the plasma and program configuration files? That should work just fine for most of the part. Well I am going to try it. As the /home comes from the 2.1 Maui I hope not too much changed. If not I just reinstall set , up again and copy back just my data files. Thanks again. |
