Hi,

the topic is a lot far from Maui, but here Your knowledge is high so I hope to find a solution.
I'm thinking to change my smartphone (LG K10) with another better but I have a lot of doubts.
I use the smartphone 90% of time for work, my needs are :
1) obviously Android
2) making phone calls
3) using Google Chrome browser
4) sending sms trough the Google app
5) using Telegram trough Telegram app
6) using Messenger / Facebook trough Facebook app
7) using Gmail e-mails trough Google Gmail app
8) using calendar on Google trough Google calendar app
9) using KDE Connect
10) using bank app
11) using IFTT app
12) using Mytaxi app
13) using Google Assistant
14) using Google Maps app for navigator
15) using an app for trains named Orario Treni Pro
In general my problems are :
1) in Italy the quality of connections is low (especially on the trains), so I need a device with high signal reception and capability to manage in a good way the change of signal quality
2) a quite good energy save (there aren't always 220 volt plugs)
3) a good compatibility with bluetooth earphones
4) a simple system without too much mods, I like the stock from Google and the apps from Google
5) an high RAM / ROM quantity.
I'm watching these 3 devices : Google Pixel 2 XL, HTC U11, OnePlus 6
I read that OnePlus 6 has a lot of problems in signal reception
What is Your advice ?
Another doubt is about the not original roms like CyanogenMod etc. : is a good idea if I buy a smartphone and I flash it with these roms ? Can I have improvements ?

Thanks

I am a relatively quite guy here, but I would like to speak my mind at this point.

First of all, let it be known, that I do agree, that the Maui devs has done an wonderful job, Maui is one of the most stable distros on KDE Plasma. By know way should my post come across that I am belittling or dethroning the orginal devs. Should it even remotely sound like disrespectful, please understand, that that is a communication gap - disrespect is not my goal.

With that in mind here is my proposal :
-----------------------------------------------

Maui devs are going to focus more on netrunner. Because I am a primarily netrunner user, I say i heart this decision. Netrunner has potential to become a great desktop distro , eventually taking down ubuntu or mint.

But, I say, can we put our shoulders under the load now ?

The devs have given us the fruit of their work. Can we, as the community take over from here, and continue? may be until the devs want to come back again ?

I do not want MAui to be a competitor to Netrunner. I want Netrunner to capture the Mint userpool, after mint is retired. I want Maui to carry the awesome stability and usability to specialist linux. In scientific community, things like scientific linux or fedora are more beloved, albeit a bit less comfortable to use than Maui.

I would like maui to be a fresh newcomer there.

The problems Maui could solve :

Stability and smooth, modern look and feel will attract mac users - leading software manufacturers eventually to consider supporting linux

There is a plethora of scientific packages in Arch User Repo, but orphaned and/or have not been updated in ages. We can take those old works, update the packagebuilds, and catch up with the actual software development.

There is a plethora of scientific software, e.g. seismic software released by USGS / NASA - and left as tarballs / rpm - not directly usable by the pacman system . we could incorporate that.

The FHS structure has been challenged by things like Gobo or NixOs. See : https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions...to-the-fhs - i think there are better ways of handling this .

So, with that proposal - here is my question :

Anybody interested in carrying the torch further where Maui Devs have left?

Again, no disrespect intended - but I'll look forward to hear from you.

I use Maui daily at work and am looking to set up a new PC with Maui soon but I wanted to know if I'm better off going with Netrunner now. I really liked having an Ubuntu-based distro since I can use PPAs, so I was also wondering if you will have any Ubuntu-based distros going forward. I'm not sure how much of this you can answer yet, but it has been about 3 months since the initial statement and I'm getting more concerned about which direction to take with new builds.

Its time for this madness to stop.

Okay so I started off with netrunner based on Kubuntu and i thought to myself "hey not a bad distro!" it was Kubuntu done right and had a lot odf nice tools into it.
But then SURPRISE! Netrunner Kubuntu is being replaced by Maui

So I tried Netrunner rolling

SURPRISE! It stopped being developed
I try Nurunner... it goes nowhere
I try Maui

I like it and then
SURPRISE!

Oh snap this schizophrenic development team changed its mind again kills off Maui and wants us to use netrunner again but this time based on debain so no PPA's.

THIS IS BULLSHIT!

STOP FOR THE LOVE OF PETE STOP!
This is tiresome, it is annoying, its development team has no idea what the fuck its doing anymore, things are changed with no warning or reason... Its time to say goodbye to this team of confused madmen and their growing case of distro changing madness.

I recently found in the Maui forum the sad news that it won’t be a future release of the maybe best Linux distribution I ever used.

I really don’t understand why that could be possible.
You gave us two options, using KDE Neon or Netrunner, but I can tell you those options are not so good like Maui and I have experience with the 3 of them.
I have 2 computers right now, one desktop and one laptop. In the Laptop I had installed KDE Neon and I had the problem that the machine went overheat and the fans worked on high power, I didn’t know why, then I change to Maui and this problem dissappear, I have a silence laptop working really fine.
On the desktop I wanted to use the most stable distribution I could find, so I started with Slackware because of its good name but after a lot of work configuring all the system I got problems with instalation of software, so I dumped Slackware.
Next I tried Opensuse Leap because of the very good reputation and it was a desaster in this computer.
Then I decided to make double boot and install Maui Linux in one partition and Netrunner (Debian) inthe second.
Maui was the best sorprise ever, this OS works like charm at the first moment, we don’t need to lose hours and hours of configurations, everthig works perfect.
Netrunner in the other hand is fast so good but it don’t move so smooth like Maui, the graphics aren’t so good and some software don’t works that good like in Maui, for example Firefox is really slow, too slow would I say.

After the discovering of Maui Linux I talked a lot about this great distribution in many spanish Linux and KDE groups and some people listened to me and they installed Maui and they had the same good experience like me. Other people said “I don’t trust in those tiny distributions, they dissappear with the time an let the users hang up” and you know what? THEY WERE RIGHT!!!!

I really don’t get it, why to dump the best KDE distribution? People like me and the other Maui users don’t want to lose time installing and configuring everthing in KDE Neon, Maui makes a perfect configuation of everything. I would never get this quality making it by myself in KDE Neon, I don't want to, I don't have time and the times when I was a computer-freaky when I wanted to learn everything about computers are in the past away for me.
Some prefer the work behind Ubuntu from the work behind of Debian because it is really easy to install a non-Linux software becase they have allways a .DEB for Ubuntu (sometimes those installers doesn’t work on Debian).

I am not the only one whi think like this, did you read this review of dedoimedo?
https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/maui-2-1-blue-tang.html
where other distributions failed, Maui got a qualification of 9/10, better that Opensuse, Debian and others more “Stable” distributions.
Or this other review in spanish:
https://colaboratorio.net/enrique/gnulinux/2017/maui-linux-2-entre-kubuntu-y-kde-neon/
again aone of the best qualifications, and yes, the autor made this review because of me and all what I said to him about Maui

Sorry for thi long entrance, I am really sad and disappointed with all this theme.

Hi guys,

Since you have already hinted that Maui is going to be discontinued, I would like to ask a favor. Maui had been the best Plasma experience ever, better than Neon since it is a complete system with applications a much easier to maintain than Netrunner Debian (I have Netrunner at work and it hasn't been such a smooth ride as Maui). I'm really surprised that you are scraping the best Plasma OS that is available, the only one that has been completely problem free for me since the beginning.

Now regarding the favor: would it be possible to write down the list of changes and modifications you do to Neon in order to get Maui? I don't care about visual changes, what interests me are the additional apps and packages you install to it and configuration changes you make to the system. It would be really great if this could be documented and not lost since, at least I would use it in order to get Neon properly configured workout having to find it all myself.

Thank you very much for all your hard work.
Cheers..
