Total system freeze [solved] - kaktux - 18th August 2016
hi there,
i just installed maui.
but within the first hours i got several total system freezez - the screen is totaoly frozen, no keyboard or other reaction whatsoever.
it is a complete new installation with partitions for swap, root and home - simply replacing netrunner 14 lts on my hd.
only thing i did so far is install chromium and kodi + copy the settings of the two from my /home backup.
freezing appeared while using kodi and chromium, but also when lnly vlc was used.
edit: sorry about typos-but i had to write this on my mobile as the firdt two tries by browser did-youll get it-freeze before i could post.
the hardware gave no problems with netrunner14. it is an intlel celeron cpu j1900 1,99GHZ, 8GB RAM, graphic on cpu, all onboard an asrock q1900dc-itx mainboard.

RE: Total system freeze - AJSlye - 19th August 2016
OK, I don't see anything there.
If the configs you copied over were from Netrunner 14 which had KDE SC 4 then most of these will no longer work under Plasma 5, and some can actually cause the lockups you are describing. Try using a unmodified home directory for a few hours first and then start adding back in your old settings one at a time only under the correct locations for Plasma 5. Don't forget to compare the old settings to the new ones as some formatting has also changed, and in some cases the use of additional config files have been added under .local/share/kxmlgui5.
KDE SC used .kde4/{etc} for most of it and it's applications to store configs, this is no longer used.
Plasma 5 now uses the xdg standard of using the .config and .local directories.

thanks - doing this i had no shutdown (so far).
Guess that makes migrating a lot more complicated.
Or is there a migration assistent from KDE4 to Plasma 5? Well guess I am happy that i don't use that much KDE Programms with changed settings (mostly dolphin - there only some folder links (webdav, ftp) and stuff like wallet, vpn etc.)
RE: Total system freeze - AJSlye - 19th August 2016
No, there isn't other than what is built into plasma 5 and the KDE applications themselves. However, these are only used when migrating settings on first run (the files already exist), they do nothing for settings added after the fact.
RE: Total system freeze - kaktux - 23rd August 2016
I reinstalled Maui blank again 2 days ago:
And the system freeze is still appearing - although this time i did not yet migrate any older settings.
What I did so far:
1. Install complete new Maui Aurora
2. Copy old files to home (no settings - only pdf, mp3 etc.
3. Install Kodi+Addons through Synaptic (and install a skin from within kodi)
4. Install 0Ad through Synaptic
The system freeze appeared again, when watching an mp4 through kodi.
The system freeze also appeared when watching the same movie with vlc
The system freeze also appeared when running 0ad to see how a game influences it (actually i did that before kodi - and the freeze appeared the first time after installing kodi/watching mp4).
It appeared the first time after i installed kodi+addons yesterday + wanted to watch an mp4.
The error doesn't happen when you start movie or game - but 5-30 minutes later.
So - it can't be related to my old files - as i don't thing copying normal data (like i said - pdf, odt etc. only) can be in any way related.
RE: Total system freeze - AJSlye - 23rd August 2016
I just found this: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051
Try adding intel_idle.max_cstate=1 to grub (boot parameter) and see if that fixes the issue.
If not, could it possibly be related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/1574354
RE: Total system freeze - kaktux - 7th September 2016
thanks aj - the cstate1 is solving the problem (although it would be nice not to fiddle with the energy options - guess i bought a consume-less cpu not to power it up - but thats a discussion for kernel developers and quite honestly i really wondered that such a thing is unsolved for so long already).
I had the option through bios - so no boot parameter needed to be changed.
RE: Total system freeze - AJSlye - 7th September 2016
I'm glad I was able to help. That's cool that you have a bios setting to avoid the issue.
Could you post what the bios settings is so others can find it on their systems?
Could you also mark the thread as solved?
Thanks.
