I don't see how this link applies to me. It's about the proprietary drivers being discontinued, which I knew, but I'm getting the black screen with the open source driver. The same open source driver (radeon) that I use on Netrunner 14 on this same computer. I've never used the AMD proprietary drivers, never downloaded or installed the proprietary drivers. I just need the open source one to work. I don't get stuttering or lag I get absolutely nothing. And according to the wiki, the radeon driver supports my video card, so I should get SOME perfomance, even if it's bad, right? I shouldn't get a black screen.

Did you try burning the maui.iso to a fresh USB and install.
Because you seem to be the only one one having this problem on this forum!
And if you already tried installing a different kernel and display manager and reinstalling nouveau, deleting your .config .cache and all plasma related files in .local it's time to try a fresh reinstall. I notice you had a problem on the openmandriva forums as well.

I'm probably the only one with this particular video card on this little forum. I'm definitely not the only one having this problem because I have found many other people asking about it but no solutions yet. And there is the bug report mentioned earlier. There is nothing wrong with the install dvd. Yes, I had a problem with graphics on Openmandriva before the first update (never a black screen boot, though) but after the update they straightened up. I couldn't get the Wacom tablet to work though, and the repos didn't include some software I needed. Peppermint, however, does has this same issue for me. I tried Openmandriva because it is not an Ubuntu based OS and I wanted to see if that made a difference. It did.

Why would I want to install nouveau? Isn't that only for Nvidia cards? I'm wondering, from every one of your replies, if you have even read the original post. Huh

Guess what? I got it to boot into the 4.7.2 kernel and it boots properly without the radeon.modeset=0 and it is finally using the radeon driver! Does that mean I have to wait until Maui updates to a newer kernel or can I use it like this?

And if I can use it now with this kernel, regarding this message I got when installing the kernel:

Quote:You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed.

I googled but could not find how to add the correct ppa so I could install the linux-generic meta-package for this kernel. I know how to add a ppa through synaptic but I don't know the info for this one.

If the kernel works for you stay with it.
Maui will in the future maybe switch to that or another kernel that supports your card as good as this kernel or even better.
But for now we follow the kernels provided by Ubuntu LTS.

Having the kernel installed should not be a big problem if it works well for you.
