Sometimes the screen randomly freeze except my mouse and the music playing on youtube. I always pressed ctrl+alt+backspace but all my app will be close and lost work. How to restart the desktop without losing the open app? Thanks.

Hey, how'd you get P5.8.4? I'm jealous; mine is still on 5.8.3, despite KDE Neon getting .4 several weeks ago. I have been thinking of asking the Devs about this for a couple of weeks (i do have the Neon backport enabled].

Anyway, to your question -- this also used to annoy me, so a few months ago i researched it & came up with this little bash script, a shortcut to which sits in the Stack folder of my Cairo-Dock. These days it does not happen too often for me, but when occasionally my Plasma session goes a bit dodgy, i run this script from said shortcut in CD. Sometimes i have to do it 2 - 4 times in a row before P is happy again, & sometimes nothing helps so more drastic action is needed. However, most of the infrequent times that i need to use it, it does the job:

Plasma5_kill_&_restart.sh

Code:
!#/bin/bash
killall plasmashell
kwin --replace
kstart plasmashell &

Thanks, but are you referring to either of these? --?

If so, i took those steps a relatively long time ago... but I'm still stuck on P5.8.3. I've now created a separate topic for this problem... https://forums.mauilinux.org/showthread.php?tid=24193

Ah, well now i suspect the mystery is probably resolved. My Maui ones are the same as yours, which is unsurprising given that leszek https://forums.mauilinux.org/showthread....4#pid41094 already said to me that "Everything is alright with your sources.list no need to edit it". leszek also advised us https://forums.mauilinux.org/showthread....5#pid41105 that "we are still testing 5.8.4 and 5.8.5 before we release it to our users via backports repo".

I now believe the reason you have 5.8.4 is probably your kubuntu backports PPA. From following the Mint KDE forum thread on this i think that's the way that Mint KDE recently jumped from 5.6.5 to 5.8.4. Personally however i continue to dislike their stubborn insistence of staying tied to Kubuntu rather than Neon, & that was the reason that i chose to leave Mint for Maui earlier this year.

I'm unwilling to use the kubuntu PPA, so i will wait for our Maui Devs to release 5.8.5... hopefully soon after new year would be a nice gift  :-)

My plasma freeze again. I tried the shortcut but did not work, so I type in the command in tty1.

I found the pattern of the error. When I start the steam app and use multiple desktops grid display when the steam is connecting to my user account, it freeze. After sometime without doing anything I can go back to the desktop with ctrl+alt+7, but the wallpaper, panel, window bar, right click option dissapear.

I can go back to normal desktop using the shortcut, so the shortcut only works when the desktop partially work. It seems that I am not allow to use desktop grid while steam is connecting to my account.
