What do you mean by desktop menu?
The application launcher overview?
If yes it is only there for holding applications and favorites. You can't add widgets onto it.
The same goes for notifications. They usually appear above the panel near the systemtray (the icons next to the clock in the panel)
When it comes to our repositories there is a an article on our homepage which explains it pretty good.
Testing repos are not encouraged to use.
If you want the latest and greatest activate the backport reposm
We will push updates in there after they are tested by us and get the green light from us.
